The first full day of my trip to Priorat began wit

The first full day of my trip to Priorat began with a visit to the tiny town of Porrera (population 400) and Vall Llach Winery. Their Embruix was the first Priorat wine I ever had and it made me fall in love with the region, so I had to visit (PS, it’s pretty readily available in the US, so I highly recommend you try a bottle!). The co-owner and winemaker, Albert Costa, spent the entire morning driving me through his vineyards, to dramatic hilltop sites, and pouring his best wines for me straight out of the barrel. It was one of the most memorable winery visits I’ve ever had. Not only is he an incredible winemaker, but he represents a winery with a deep love for this town.

His father started the winery with a famous Spanish singer in the 1990s, but neither man drank wine! They started the business to improve the lives of the people in the small town of Porrera that was failing as grape growers and vineyard workers were being paid almost nothing, forcing people to leave the area and head to the cities for work. They established the vineyards and winery as a way to pay people a high wage for their hard work and revitalize their town. The only way to do that was to make quality wine that people would buy at premium prices! Today, Vall Llach is still putting much of their profits back into the town and its people.

Their wines were the best I tasted on the entire trip! I can’t wait for the release of their top bottling, Mas de la Rosa, made from old vine Carignan planted on a treacherously steep vineyard (check out the photos) which sold out the last vintage so I need to somehow get my hands on it when it hits the market!

Made it back to NJ after United cancelled my fligh

Made it back to NJ after United cancelled my flight and I almost missed a connection in Frankfurt 🥵. The final day of my trip was in the dramatically dry, rugged, mountainous region of Priorat where you find super high quality wine from Grenache and Carignan old vines (100+ years). I met with 3 amazing winemakers who were the most wonderful people and so generous of their time. And had lunch at a Michelin starred restaurant. There are so many amazing photos and info to share that I can’t get them all into one post, so I’ll start here worth the evening of my arrival.

1) I hired Ivan from Wino Tours to organize my stay and take me everywhere. He was phenomenal! If you ever travel to Barcelona, look him up!

2) Our first stop was the tiny town of Gratallops, the capital of Priorat, where we paid an impromptu visit to Cellar Cecilio, a family run winery and the first registered in Priorat in 1942. Their wine was delicious and they were selling it for 12-15 Euros and it costs $60 in the US!!

3) We then arrived at my hotel, the beautiful and eco-friendly Terra Dominicata. It was peaceful and gorgeous at the foot of the dramatic Montsant Mountains that act as a rain shadow keeping the area extremely arid.

First full day of my Cava program started at the DO Cava Regulatory Board (organization that manages regulations and promotion of Cava) with a Masterclass and blind tasting of a dozen wines. We then visited Bodegues Sumarroca to learn about organic and sustainable viticulture in the area and have an absolutely stunning lunch on their terrace. Next was a visit to Vins El Cep for discussion and tasting of Paraje Calificado wines, which are the highest quality Cavas available and exceedingly rare, with only 9 wines in total earning this prestigious designation! They also gave us a very cool comparative tasting of the same wine aged under crown cap (most commonly done) versus cork - the difference was enlightening! Then we finished up at Blancher, a local winery where they still do everything by hand. The night was topped off with an insanely delicious dinner and even more wine at the hotel.
